Nasza kanadyjska przygoda, cz.7: Stary Montreal:-)

To już nasza ostatnia relacja z Kanady.

Dziś pokażę Wam zakątki starego Montrealu czyli Vieux-Montreal.

Oczywiście trzeba wziąć pod uwagę fakt, że Kanada jest dość młodym państwem 

(w tym roku obchodzi 150 - lecie istnienia) więc to co dla Kanadyjczyków jest stare 

dla Europejczyków wcale takie stare nie jest.
Choć Montreal jest nieco starszy i w tym roku świętuje 375 lat swojego istnienia.

Stary Montreal to bardzo urokliwa część miasta, posiadająca swoją duszę:-)

Szczególnie piękna jest wieczorem gdy jest oświetlona specjalnym systemem świateł.

Można tu poczuć prawdziwy francuski klimat, w szczególności w małych restauracyjkach, 

których jest tu mnóstwo.

It's the last post from Canada.

I will take you today to the heart of Old Montreal.

However, you have to take into consideration the fact that Canada is quite a young country
(this year they are celebrating its 150 anniversary) and what seems to be old for Canadians

is not so old for Europeans. Although, Montreal celebrates its 375th anniversary this year. 

Old Montreal is a very picturesque and charming part of the city.

It is especially beautiful in the evening when the lights are on.

You can feel unique, French atmosphere everywhere,
not only in the wonderful small restaurants.

Now let me take you to this beautiful place:-)

Bazylika Maryi Królowej Świata.

Pochodzi z końca XIX w. i jest wierną kopią rzymskiej bazyliki św. Piotra w skali 1:3

Mary, Queen of the World Cathedral.

It goes back to XIX century and it's a copy of St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome.

Katedra Notre Dame

To najstarszy i najważniejszy kościół Montrealu. Jest to również największy kościół 

w Ameryce Północnej, budowany przez prawie cały XIX w. Może ona pomieścić 5 tys. osób. 

Jego architekt James O'Donnel był protestantem. Zachwycony swoim dziełem, przeszedł na katolicyzm tylko po to, by móc spocząć w podziemiach kościoła. Neogotyckie wnętrze zdobi mnóstwo drewnianych rzeźb i bajkowe, błękitno-złote podświetlane polichromie, 

dzieło montrealskiego architekta Victora Bourgeau. Na dwóch wieżach katedry wisi dziesięć dzwonów, jeden z nich waży ponad 11 ton i jest największym dzwonem w Ameryce.
Niestety nie mogliśmy zajrzeć do środka ponieważ akurat wtedy odbywał się koncert:-(

Notre-Dame Basillica 

It's the oldest and the most important church in Montreal. It is also the biggest church in North America, built in XIX century. It has the capacity of 5 000 people. Basilica was designed by James O'Donnel. He was a proponent of the Gothic Revival architectural movement, and designed the church as such. He is the only person buried in the church's crypt. 

O'Donnell converted to Roman Catholicism on his deathbed 

perhaps due to the realization that he might not be allowed to be buried in his church.

The church is highly decorated. The vaults are coloured deep blue and decorated with golden stars, and the rest of the sanctuary is decorated in blues, azures, reds, purples, silver, and gold. 

It is filled with hundreds of intricate wooden carvings and several religious statues.
Unfortunately, we couldn't get inside because of the concert:-( 

Ratusz miejski, czyli Hôtel de Ville został wzniesiony w latach 70-tych XIX w. 

Budynek reprezentuje miejscowy styl tutejszych budynków użyteczności publicznej z czasów, 

gdy francuskojęzyczni architekci czerpali inspirację z architektury swojej ojczyzny. 

Z miejscem tym wiąże się ważne dla Kanady wydarzenie. 

Goszczący w mieście na wystawie światowej w 1967r., generał de Gaulle wypowiedział 

z balkonu na drugim piętrze ratusza symboliczne słowa:

 „Vive le Québec libre” (Niech żyje wolny Québec), 

doprowadzając tym samym do kryzysu.

Montreal City Hall or Hôtel de Ville  was built in 1878. 

The building was modeled after the city hall of the French city of Tours.

This place is related to a very important event.

It was in 1967 when Charles de Gaulle, the president of France,

gave his Vive le Quebec libra speech from the building's balcony,

leading to a crisis.
